It’s a big issue that too often gets overlooked. Many Australians enjoy Anime, and Anime DVDs are widely available through home grown distributors like Madman Entertainment, but how many Aussie Anime fans have asked the question: Why is it cool to like Japan now, but Japan was the enemy in World War II?

If you’ve ever been to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, this will become obvious to you. Australian heroes like Weary Dunlop assisted prisoners of war captured and mistreated by the Japanese forces, and they are remembered as agreeable characters who are venerated as true Aussie blokes.

But apart from a bit of History learned in schools, a lot of Aussie Anime fans may be unaware of the history of Japan/Australian relations. I can’t pretend I know everything about it either, I’m still in school. I’m simply opening up a discussion of why Australia’s attitude of Japan changed.
